No matter what your political beliefs are, it’s clear that there is a wave of citizen activism that we haven’t seen since the 1960’s, both in America and abroad.
As I see the democratic process in this country becoming more difficult to navigate, I want to make my voice heard and help drive lasting change, just like many other everyday people. We march in the streets, we sign petitions, we send postcards to our politicians, we make phone calls, we post our issues on social media… and then what?
It seems like no matter what we did, there was little real change. It was so frustrating. Sure, we all feel great after a day of protesting with people who are just as ardent about a cause as we are. And we bring attention to our issues, but, at the end of the day, what have we really accomplished? It seemed to me that the average person didn’t have enough power to make any real change in this world.
Then, Darlene told me how things really work in government. As a veteran lobbyist of over twenty-five years, she was able to pull back the curtain and reveal the secrets of how big businesses and large associations use lobbyists and Political Action Committees (PACs) as levers to wield political influence. And that change, even with these powerful levers, doesn’t happen overnight. It requires a long-term strategy and process.
While everyday people are outside protesting, the people on the other side of our issues use a more direct approach. They hire lobbyists to meet with legislators to push their issues, over and over again. Long after we’ve posted our protest pictures on social media, those against us are still pushing their side, directly with decision makers. That‘s the game and those with the money have been playing and winning for a very long time.
Darlene was also concerned about small and medium sized organizations and businesses who also have issues of concern, but can’t afford the services of a lobbyist to advocate on their behalf. How could we level the playing field?
At that moment, we had an epiphany — The Advocator.
Why not use crowdfunding to give every person in this country the money and the power to use real tools to change or defend state, and federal law, or regulations? The Advocator gives everyone the same access, tools, and knowledge that has, until now, been closely held by big business and others who know how the game is really played.
And Darlene guides everyone every step of the way with her decades of experience.
